Seasonal overview

The succession of sharply contrasting climatic conditions enabled the grapes to reach maturity with remarkable integrity and fullness, capturing the essence of a vintage that is both demanding and generous.

Tasting notes

Distinct notes of small dark berries unfold alongside elegant floral and spicy nuances, with delicate balsamic hints and subtle notes of undergrowth. The palate shows a dynamic progression defined by freshness, energy and depth.

Winemaking

The wine matures for about 16 months in new French oak barriques, gaining breadth and structure. The blend is then bottled and left to age in the cellar, where it rests slowly for no less than three years.

The Territory

The small hamlet of Solomeo sits on a gentle hill halfway between Lake Trasimeno and the capital of the Umbria region. The Agrarian Park lies at the foot of this medieval settlement and features cultivated fields, an olive grove arranged in a characteristic radial pattern, and a vineyard with undulating rows.

Here, on land that slopes gently down into the valley, different soils have been carefully matched to each of the grape varieties grown: marl-limestone lends finesse to Cabernet Franc, sandy clay shapes the character of Cabernet Sauvignon, calcareous soil refines Sangiovese, while deep alluvial deposits give Merlot a full and harmonious vigor.

The spirit of the Genius loci

The geometric lines of the vineyard harmoniously echo the sweeping circular design of the Monument to Human Dignity. All around, the symbolic landmarks of the hamlet of Solomeo embrace one another: the castle, the church, the theatre, and the library.

On the label of Castello di Solomeo, the spirit of the Genius loci transcends time and space, uniting dream with reality — the vision of the human mind with the ancestral wisdom of the earth.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Castello di Solomeo 2021 RP 95

"This vintage stood as the best and the most balanced", stated Monica Larner, journalist for the prestigious Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, who awarded it an excellent score of 95 out of 100. "The 2021 vintage shows etched aromas of blackcurrant and plum with earthy tones, lavender bud and smoky grilled herb. The tannins are firm but not overpowering, and the wine is nicely layered and rich. This release shows the lessons learned along the way as this winemaking team matures and the vines get older".

"If I ask myself why I chose to produce Castello di Solomeo wine here in Solomeo, my thoughts go back to the time when a desire was born in me—a desire so beautiful that it seemed extraordinary, and so I made it become a living reality without asking myself from whence it came.

It was only after some time, when I tasted the bubbling first pressed must and then the first tapped wine. While I was savouring all this under the noble vaults of the cellar, I suddenly felt inside me, like the gush of a new source, a feeling of gratitude, bursting gratitude towards Gaea, Earth Mother, of which all humanity throughout its ancient history is the daughter, and I suddenly understood where the desire that had led me to that lovely result came from.

I love the Earth".
